Remembering Wondrous Words

Jan: Picture book invitation to our library during the last session

Judy: Read common text and made a poem out of a line: gathering of voices
Performance poem that we tried in different ways

Sue: Reading like a writer…pick out things that stood out…identifying the different techniques that writers use. Shared student work based on reading The Relatives Came…repeat the grapes…use of and…hug…circular form…those relatives repetitive…no one is ever named…rhythm

Dotty: Katy Wood Rae says when you read like a writer you use the authors words to name the technique (not technical language, but the authors own words), and then envision using it in your own writing

Sue: Kids thought about how they would use an author’s techniques and then they wrote.

Judy: Used In the Tall Tall Grass to help kids write their own story…used the same cadence and rhythm to write their own version. Plans to do a Lois Ehlert study.

Sue: Offered that Judy can have the kids create their own collage pieces by having the kids sponge paint paper that can be used for collage
David: Has plenty of cardboard

Amy: Ruthie has plans for using mentor texts
Sue is also planning to use mentor text

David: There should be a pile of texts in a classroom that focus on a chosen topic…Short fiction really has to be short, as in cricket Magazine. If you are doing a picture book study, read the text without the pictures…
Living like a writer is important. David mentioned his friend’s blog and having parents write about family. Kids have the experience of parents as writers.

Anita: Family writing nights are part of curriculum meetings. Kids and parents come together to write…demystifying the writing process.

Writing: Think of a mentor in your life
Anita read A Writer by M B Goffstein
Everyone shared writing
